A "Google" Without Sheep's Clothes

I remember when Google appeared to be a white knight crashing through the fibers of the internet. Nowadays they seem more like big brother. They are tracking everything that you do if you use gears, search history, build sites with their google site services, etc. I can only imagine that there will be something else that will come along and do a better job, but who or whom? Will it come in the form of a browser without the need for a search engine? After all, Google Chrome allows you to search from the URL. I think that the operating systems are more important as they are moving forward. Operating Systems are what everyone needs to get to the internet, even though they have internet connectivity, some hardware, and a little know-how.

Now that most of what we do is somewhere in the clouds, controlled by some wizard of Oz (we know who you are...), when does everything come back down to earth? The free of the internet is over. Facebook is "contemplating" charging (who would have thought? lol). I found out that if I punch the monkey in the online ad, I really dont win an Ipod (go figure...)

I have changed my thinking of free and converted it to more of a barter system of sorts. The open source community in it's purist form - not just the "if it's free it's for me" mindset, but the giving back to the community with help, suggestions, code changes, and of course a guarantee that you wont turn into Google. So, is Ubuntu, or is it Canonical, the answer? Maybe Slackware or Open BSD?

Either way, I would like to find others who are using open source tools in their classrooms as well as some that would like to start. If you are new to open source tools, take a look at this link http://edu.kde.org/

PA Online Learning Summit

We will concentrate on Moodle, an open-source learning management system, though many other distance-learning technologies will be shared and discussed.
